The Backrooms Film Director Revisits Valve Headquarters, Possibly for Portal-Themed Movie

Kane Parsons, director of "The Backrooms", recently appeared again at Valve headquarters and shared related footage on his personal social media. Given his previous public statements expressing his love for "Portal", this visit has once again sparked speculation about a potential "Portal" movie adaptation.

At just 20 years old, Kane Parsons has become one of the most talked-about young directors in recent years. His debut film, "Backrooms," produced with a budget of approximately 10 million dollars, grossed around 393 million dollars worldwide. The film also garnered praise from both cinephiles and critics alike, with even Hideo Kojima publicly commending the movie.

"The Backrooms" originated as an urban legend concept from the 4Chan forum, later evolving into a vast online creative community that spawned numerous independent horror games, artworks, and YouTube videos. Parsons himself gained popularity through his own "Backrooms" series of YouTube videos, ultimately leading to his role as the director of the A24 film adaptation.

With the success of "The Backrooms," Parsons has recently started appearing in many noteworthy places, including Valve headquarters.

On September 16, sharp-eyed fans noticed that Parsons had posted a video on his Instagram Story, featuring a room with floor-to-ceiling windows located at Valve's headquarters.

It is worth noting that this is not Parsons' first visit to Valve. In June this year, he visited Valve's headquarters and similarly shared photos on Instagram.

Having visited Valve twice in quick succession, coupled with Parsons' previously public expression of his love for *Portal*, more and more fans are beginning to speculate whether both parties are discussing some form of collaboration centered around Valve's games.

When interviewed by The New York Times this May, Parsons stated that making a Portal movie was his "dream project," also noting that Portal had a significant influence on his creative work.

His affection for Valve's work was not just lip service. In a previous interview with IGN, Parsons even admitted that he had sneaked a sound effect from Half-Life into The Backrooms.

However, Portal hitting the big screen isn't exactly a simple process.

As early as 2013, renowned director and producer J.J. Abrams announced plans to produce a Portal movie through his Bad Robot production company. Alongside this, a Half-Life film adaptation was also revealed at the time, but both projects have since seen little substantive progress.

In 2021, J.J. Abrams stated in an interview with IGN that the Portal movie was still in development at Warner Bros. However, in the five years since, there has been no significant news about the project.

Parsons's frequent visits to Valve have led many fans to begin wondering whether Valve has changed course and is preparing to collaborate with the director of "The Backrooms."

Some fans have stated, "How long has J.J. Abrams' Portal and Half-Life movies actually been in development—since 2013? If Kane really wants to make a Portal movie, I don’t see any reason for Valve to stop him."

Another fan stated, "Portal was originally planned to be adapted by J.J. Abrams, but thankfully it never got made. So I think there's a real possibility this time."

However, as of now, neither Valve nor Kane Parsons has officially announced that a Portal movie is in production. It remains unknown what project Parsons' visits to Valve are related to, but after repeatedly expressing interest in Portal, his consecutive appearances at Valve's headquarters have undoubtedly reignited discussions among players about this long-dormant film project.
